5 Ways to get out of a Style Rut

girl-looking-in-closet

I find that many of us find a style which suits us & then we stick with it for the next 10 years because a) it’s comfortable and b) we don’t like change or maybe we scared of change. We are stuck in a Style Rut! We very quick to buy new scatter cushions for our bed or couch to freshen up our decor look, but what about us? We need to do the same with ourselves. We need to be more current. Wearing the same prints we have had in our wardrobe for years can age us. When it comes to aging it takes time to change your skin but you can instantly change your style.

Here are a few tips to get out of your Style Rut:

1. De-clutter your wardrobe
Giveaway or donate anything you have not been wearing in the last year (except for those sentimental items..keep those!). Don’t keep those items which are too small…face it…life changes, we have kids and our figures change. Don’t depress yourself!

2. Play Dress up
Once you start going through your wardrobe you will start finding items you have forgotten about. We also are creatures of habit and always tend to wear the same items together. We get comfortable and often find trying something new pretty scary. I challenge you to stand in front of the mirror and try putting together different combinations. Get out of your Style Rut! Try new outfits and don’t forget to accessorize!

3. Inspiration Board
With Social Media being such a large part of our lives we are exposed to so many different styles. Find your style icon. Is there a person dead or alive who you think dresses beautifully in a style which you resonate with? Obviously the “alive” option is easier which gives you more current trends. Start following this person on Pinterest and create a board saying “My Style”. You can pin other peoples styles as well. Once you’ve been doing this for a while, go back on your board and flip through the images. You will start noticing a common thread between these images. Try putting a few of these ideas together during your “dress up”. It’s lots of fun! You will be exposed to a whole new style for your wardrobe.

4. Learn to Accessorize
After consulting with many clients I have found that this is a big downfall for many people. I often think of Accessories as your icing and sprinkles on a chocolate cake. How much more tantalizing does that cake look with decorations? It makes you want to eat it:) Yes, we need to add the sprinkles to our outfits! It makes the world of difference. I challenge you to accessorize everyday for a week. This could be in the form of a beautiful handbag, scarf, necklace, earrings or even a beautiful pair of shoes.

5. Less is More
How many of us say “I have nothing to wear”? Yet, we have a wardrobe FULL of clothing. Ok, so it’s the 80/20 Rule. If you really analyse it, you are probably wearing 20% of your wardrobe and 80% is just hiding the fabulous items. We all think MORE is MORE but in actual fact MORE is LESS. The more you have the less you have to wear. We need to apply the LESS is MORE principal where we build more with fewer items. Building a Capsule Wardrobe is the way forward. Start investing in key items & then accessorize these items. Add one or two new trends and you’re on your way!
